GZ, I don't have a Mac, but I know that if it is a MS word file and the Mac has MSWord (most do), the file will open in Word. You might have to save as an older version if that's what is on the friend's computer.

If they don't have Word, find out what they have and save as that type if possible. Or save as a rich text format, which they should be able to open.

I believe PDF files are produced in Acrobat, not the free Acrobat Reader. Don't know what the mcw file type is.

GZ, once you convert a *.doc [or any other word processor file] to *.pdf, anyone anywhere can read it and it will not change its formatting. But you need the FULL Adobe Acrobat program [not the AA Reader]. I use AA daily to 'save' web pages and other items. AA acts like just another printer.

At online auctions AA may be cheaper.

Save the .doc as .mcw 4.0 and if they have a recent version of word for the mac they should be able to read it with no problem. Like most programs, later versions can read older versions but not vice versa. Ergo....save it in the oldest version...4.0. You can also save it as .txt and they can read it (although you may lose any formatting). RTF (rich-text format) can not be read by some mac word processors.

I believe you will need to purchase the full version of Acrobat to create .pdf files.....if my memory serves it's about $200.

It may be easier to share it by converting it to HTML and sharing via Geocities or some other website, assuming you aren't looking to share important information. Just a thought.

Too late now but for future reference there is a way to make a pdf file without adobe installed. From Lockergnome newsletter.

lockergnome.com

"The PDF (Portable Document Format) has been around for years. No doubt you have a few of them scattered about your hard drive. The problem: creating a PDF could cost you hundreds of dollars. The answer: find a cheaper way of doing it. Remember that 'Add Printer' wizard you have sitting inside your Printers folder? Yeah, well... run it. We need to create a virtual output device that's capable of handling PostScript documents. You may need to install the printer manually, making sure to set "FILE" as the port. When prompted for the printer manufacturer and model, you can choose anything with the "PS" appendage. For the sake of argument, let's say we use the "HP Color LaserJet 5/5M PS" device. Again, this is just a VIRTUAL printer; don't run out and buy it. Once the drivers have been installed, go ahead and open up a Word document. Press CTRL+P to bring up the Print dialog, and select your newly created VIRTUAL printer. Be sure to put a checkmark in the "Print to file" box. Go ahead and save it to your Desktop. Now, flail on over to PS2PDF.COM and convert that sucker for free. "
