DearM: Well, believers believe that the Hand of God was involved in the writing of the Bible.
As to no science--hmmm. Seems to me the wheel was invented, the concept of O was invented, the calendar was invented. Astronomy was pretty advanced. Pyramids were built that EVEN TODAY far exceed anything modern man can do with machines. These are but a few of the INVENTIONS of science. As to medicine, seems to me from what I am reading we are JUST NOW beginning TO RETURN to practice many of the medical discoveries made thousands of years ago. ie today its called Alternative Medicine but I question which one should be called the Alternative. I think you ought to give our forebearers a little more credit. JDN

"As you know Jesus did not write the Bible, the authors are unknown. He was not born of a virgin, he was not physically resurrected, he did not perform miracles etc. etc."

Man you're going to get letters....:-) Yes, I know he did not write the bible and according to some of Thomas Jefferson's letters on the subject Jesus's story was written by "unlearned" men long after the events took place. Jefferson had great respect for Jesus's teachings but was not convinced of his divinity.

" Science and medicine was primitive, virtually non-existent, therefore all cures were attributed to God."

Yes, anything that could not be expained or understood by the common people was said to be an action of God. I think it is clear that the fear of a god was and is still used to keep people in line and in control.
Organized religions, as you know, still control entire nations. Christianity was probably "invented" to provide a human image to worship. God is such an abstract image that I doubt any two people, including you, envision (he, she, or it) the same way. Annointing Jesus as a god solved that problem. It was Voltaire (I think) who said, "if God didn't exist, he would have to be invented."
