You cannot model and reinforce healthy, constructive behaviors without some general agreement on what they are, and that means that there has to be a standard independent of personal whim that is discoverable through discourse.........

I'm surprised you can't see that the former leads to the latter, you have it turned around. In other words, belief precedes, and underlies behavior. I suppose that you could work backwards and say that what you do is a reflection of what you truly believe, but it is impossible as you suggest to dichotomize the two without destroying both. Either you will have mindless obedience, or intellectual sterility. Anyway, as James said, "Faith without works is dead"
