If they started doing that upon the release of the p4, it still probably would have taken 3 years (minimum) to get the chip to production. All they can do is hope that the k8 design team did a good job, because if they didn't they're in deep trouble, and there will be no quick hack available.

I'd be curious to see what things would be like if AMD had the p4 core and Intel had the athlon core. My guess is AMD would still get smoked because Intel would control the benchmarks, and people would say AMD's high frequency was trying to fool the consumer.
