>>"If he fought too hard the military spending would not have occurred and the USSR might be alive and well today."<<

Jla, this is one of the major Reagan myths you right wingers, who want to canonize Reagan just love to spread. Bull!

Andropov and his protege Gorbachov (Chernecko filled in temporarily because of Andropov's early death) came to power because the system was so corrupt and failing so rapidly. I was there in 85 and you had to be blind and deaf not to see that this was one very sorry place. Outside of the beauty of the Kremlin at night and the wonders of the metro stations, the air of Moscow was so awful deadening when compared to the spirit of Western Europe.

The idea that the CIA and Pentagon did not know this before Reagan is preposterous.

I will never forget the line from the postcard that my son sent to me while in the Soviet Union on his senior high school trip.... "Dad, why were we afraid of these people?"

Bush I was right about Reagan's "voodoo economics" and it almost bankrupt us until Bush I (grudgingly) and Clinton got us off the edge.

Now, here we go again.....build a 21st century Maginot Line to fend off who???? ...... North Korea??.....steal funds from the SS Trust Fund and the elderly and poor so the bloated military/industrial welfare complex can prosper.

Your line and that of all who love this country and planet should be ............................................... Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Sorry. I was there. Tip O'Neill and the boys were largely to blame.

You must have been sleeping through it all.

Reagan shared some of the blame no doubt in that he should have fought for the necessary spending cuts.

Look at the Cato article [I'm sure you can find it.] All the increased Defense spending of Reagan's >>>>> deficit.

Nope. Read the Constitution. Spending bills originate in the Dem controlled (at that time) House.

If you want to go through that tactic of who started it, then you might include that the budget process starts with the Administration submitting a budget to Congress...which was Rep controlled, sic Reagan at the time.

But who starts it isn't particularly important; there are three players in the game, the Administration, the House and the Senate. They all have roughly equal roles [but it could be easily argued that the White House and the Senate have more power due with respect to vetoes.]

And it still remains that the Senate was Republican controlled for 6 of the 8 years. Two out of three controlled by the Reps.
