Gee, I am fascinated by your son's geopolitical insights (Senior trip, no less!), but at the time, Reagan and his supporters were among the few people who thought it possible that the Soviet Union would collapse. Democratic pundits were sure that Reagan was playing into the hands of the hardliners, and would create a more dangerous situation........

Agreed.

It's now a matter of public record that the Intelligence community and Pentagon did know and briefed Reagan shortly after he took office. The briefing included that the Soviet Union was already in a state of collapse and their military was no longer being paid. Whatever Reagan did or didn't do on military spending was irrelevent to the following collapse of the Soviet Union. The Soviets were just simply out of money. It was all released in Senate hearings early this year.
