Look, it wasn't a lie. It may have been a mischaracterization (according to your interpretation of X's writings) and it may have been a fair characterization (noting it wasn't even refuted by X). But it wasn't a lie.

The only lie I saw was your characterizing it as a lie.

To judge whether the original statement was inadvertent, one must note what happens when the 'inadvertency' is pointed out.

There are other possible explanations for the reaction of which you speak. It doesn't necessarily confirm the correctness of your assertion. It might be embarrassment. Or instinctive defensive posture. Or a casual regard for fine distinctions, sometimes pejoratively knows as quibbling. It could be a lot of things.
