eCo, Re: "You mean by virtue of the fact that the company one tenth the size of the other was able to prevent itself from being "road kill" in the face of a hostile environment and overwhelming odds? Yeah, most expected a big red number there..."

Well, you finally are starting to get the right perspective. AMD has done exceptionally well for a company in their position. But after being poised with a knockout punch after the end of last year, they really missed the opportunity to nail Intel for good. Now, that opportunity may not show itself for a long time.

I consider myself as having realistic expectations for AMD. I don't think they are in for long term losses. I don't think they have bad management, or horrible marketing. I think it could be a lot better, but it is no worse than similar companies. I don't think that SOI is going to be a failure, or that K8 will slip into oblivion. AMD will continue to have competitive features that will prevent them from being cast to the way-side, just as long as they don't do something stupid between now and then.

But my major gripe is with people that make it sound as if AMD is suddenly going to rise to unbelievable heights, due to better-than-expected outcomes, right on the horizon. AMD is a capable company, but they aren't going to be the next Intel any time soon. I also take offense to the "misery loves company" sentiment. Too many people here feel justified with AMD's losses, just as long as Intel will lose out, too. They go out of their way to give theory after theory on how each successive quarter will be Intel's last profitable season. Rather than boasting AMD's accomplishments, the majority of their time is spent spreading FUD over the competition. That's not a comforting sign that AMD is doing well, when their investors have no consolation, but to bash the opposition.

P.S. This doesn't go for everyone on this thread, but I think you can figure out who qualifies for these statements.
