AMD is a capable company, but they aren't going to be the next Intel any time soon.<<<<<<<<<<<< You do realize this is an investment thread, and a lot of the people are here because we have wisely or foolishly put our faith in AMD. Thus we are biased; however we just may be biased for a reason. Intel, with all of their problems last yr. gave AMD a great opportunity, and for the most part AMD took advantage of it. While many people may feel Intel has corrected their problems, I haven't seen any indication of that, as the P4 just isn't up to snuff, when you compare it against other Intel releases. While the P4 clocks well, it just doesn't perform well in most applications. INtel with their marketing has been able to paper it over so far, but don't bet that the Hammer series won't show up the P4, if the Hammer is as good as Dirk was talking about. Right now, Intel seems perched on the abyss, as GM was in the 70's, and IBM, and now JNPR. INtel needs a good Itanium, or an improved balanced P4, not just marketing, to step back from the edge. And Intel I believe, needs to accept and embrace new concepts and ideas, such as Nforce, or even Via's 266 chipset. Intel is fighting with Via and NVidia over licensing, while AMD has signed up tens of manufacturers for Hypertransport; which could cost Intel dearly, as Intel by controlling the bus, has been able to control its competitors with its licenses. If Intel loses the bus, the rest may be history. While Intel may have eliminated AMD from some big OEM's , the marketshare gains by AMD in the report yesterday seem to indicate there are too many holes to plug. To me the big one was "30% of small business " because most large businesses started as a small business. 30% is a lot when you consider where AMD was two yrs ago. So even with the downturn, with the good news today, that the semis have hit bottom and are starting to rebound; it certainly looks like AMD will live to fight another day. With a healthy economy , both AMD and Intel will be able to raise prices. However it looks like AMD will come out of the recession with improved marketshare and a new fab; and they may have gotten enough time to bring Hammer to market; before P4 takes a good hold. Time will tell.
