Yes, I've read the neural pathway stuff too. I believe it came out of older studies of patients with brain damage due to stroke and catastrophic injury (ie. bullet wounds).

I am not sure civility IS style with out substance. Is that what you are trying to say?

Because I think what Kholt and I are saying (and Kholt please correct me if I have misunderstood you) is that civility is a KIND of substance. It is the substantive choice to be pleasant over the gulf of difference that may separate you from someone else. When looked at that way civility could be considered a rather profound moral choice.
