If people see parenthood as their most important secular commitment, then they will put up with more in order to provide a stable environment in which to grow up. I would go so far as to say that someone who has not been in a sustained marriage, or raised children, has difficulty being fully emotionally mature and morally developed. And I would go so far as to say that not everyone should be raising children and that the environment should be nurturing to both the next generation and those who raise them and to those who choose a different sort of life.
