I wonder how much of the market they've managed to take? It's the segment which is least likely to try something new, but it's also the segment where AMD has the most compelling advantage. I priced out some dual processor workstations today, Dell with 2 1.7GHZ chips, 512 meg ram and identical video card, DVD, etc. vs. Dual Athlon 1.2GHZ systems - which are faster at compiling code (the purpose of the workstations). The Dell was $1,500+ more for a slower machine. We're going with the Athlons (it's only a handfull of machines, but money is tight these days). How many others have been coming to the same conclusion?

Jim, Re: "Lame and Fraunhofer probably have over 95% of the MP3 encoder market"

I didn't know that. I would have assumed the Microsoft equivalent program to have a majority of this market. But if you are correct, then benchmarks should be testing those two encoders. The same of course goes for other apps that consumers use a lot. I mentioned the Canon E-Jay Mpeg Encoder, not just because Intel optimized the hell out of it, but also because a number of retail PCs (and Canon MP3 players, of course) bundle this application as part of their software suite. Therefore, this one should also have a good percentage of the remaining market share for MP3 encoders.
