Fyo, Re: "do you know if Intel's "consumer" P4 on .13µ will have 512kB L2 cache as well?"

That's the rumor, and almost every enthusiast site that's privy to Intel internal roadmaps seem to confirm this. Xbitlabs and TheRegister come to my mind as sources that have been reliable with roadmap and pricing info in the past, and they both agree that it will have 512KB of L2. If this is true, I expect a 5-10% increase in performance, which is the equivalent of 1 or 2 Pentium 4 speed grades. Thus, a 2.0GHz Northwood would probably perform like a 2.2GHz Willamette. This is just my WAG, but of course it will depend on the application. I am also thinking that this will largely cancel out the benefit of AMD's micro-architectural improvements in the Palomino core. Thus, a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 equaling a 1.4GHz Athlon should follow the same rules as a 3.0GHz Northwood equaling a 2.4GHz Barton by the end of next year. The only exception is if many more applications arrive with Pentium 4 optimizations, which would put the ball back in Intel's court (and I think there is a fair chance of this happening). But like I said, take this with a grain of salt... it's just my personal prediction.

I honestly don't think I'm being unfair to either side when I say that a 1.4GHz Athlon is on par with a 1.8GHz P4 in terms of performance. With the 2GHz P4, however, Intel has moved into the (performance) lead.

I came to the same conclusion.

While I haven't seen any direct benchmarks, extrapolation and other guesswork leads me to conclude that it would require a 1.5GHz Palomino to reach performance parity with the 2GHz P4.

I agree.
