Cirruslvr, Re: "The 2GHz P4 has higher SPEC int AND fp scores than Itanium, what's with that?! Foster w/2MB L3 cache should blow it away. Didn't Rob bring up this potential situation some time ago? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Itanium is 64-bit and is paving the way for McKinley."

As long as McKinley can beat Foster, and still come with all those RAS features that make 64-bit computing worth the premium over the commodity 32-bit market, I think things will find a way of working out. Rumors say that McKinley will be twice the speed of the current Itanium. I'm thinking that just as long as it is around 50% faster and scales reasonably well, it has a good chance competing against Sun and turning out a positive NPV.

Thanks for pointing that out. P4 is once again on the top of the heap in SPEC performance, both Integer and Floating Point. Faster than Itanium. Faster than the newest Alphas, faster than anything. What a large die L2 Foster will do is downright scary!

Yes. The "pincer" move. Merced is Dead. But IA64 lives
on and on.

I think a leg up for McKinley might be something like
a 4 processor box with 8 Gigs of Memory and does tpmC better
than a 4 processor RISC box to kickstart W2K on IA64.
(Cheaper and faster than RISC but still neck and neck
with IA32, strange as it seems).

I think IA64 gets off to a very slow start. This isn't
new thinking. But does run contrary to all the glowing
reports you might have read 12-18 months ago.

Cirrus, <The 2GHz P4 has higher SPEC int AND fp scores than Itanium, what's with that?!>

I've said before that Merced's most potent competition might be Foster. This doesn't surprise me, though I did expect higher SPECint scores for Merced a while back.

<I don't understand why you continue to respond to Pete. Sure he has points once every 20 posts or so, but you gotta read an essay to find it.>

The secret is that I skim right through the essays and get to the real points, or at least the points which I can respond to with one-liners.
