In UK the asylum seekers beaten or killed were sent sent by the government to public housing in places like Glasgow, not allowed to work and given coupons to buy food with. Very easy to pick on. The local population doesn't seem to know why they are there. In Australia we stick them in camps until their status is processed if they are genuine refugees they then get accepted to live in Australia. Most of the current wave of Afghan-Iraq etc. refugees are being accepted in the end. The last big wave of illegal immigrants came from Fujian in China on boats they rammed into beaches in Eastern Australia. They sent most of them back to China and now they stopped coming. These people paid big money to people smugglers. Current lot do too. They fly from Pakistan to Indonesia. Get on boats there and come to Australia. Indonesia says it isn't their problem. The Aussie government says we are now physically running out of space and need to build more camps. In the meantime there are refugees in Pakistan or wherever who apply to the Australian embassies in those countries and get accepted under our refugee program. Christmas Island currently has a huge load of asylum seekers who showed up there earlier in the week who are hard enough to deal with anyway. In any case the Australian Airforce is flying in supplies to this remote location for the latest load of refugees.

On the whole I am in favor of more freedom of immigration, but there is a lot more to this story in Australia which isn't seen when suddenly there are worldwide headlines about this ongoing saga.

People still seem to think Australia is a totally Anglo-Celtic country. Any look in the streets around the cities here will show how much immigration Australia has received in the last fifty years. Only Israel has a higher percentage of foreign born citizens.
