I've always thought that 512KB L2 cache on the Pentium 4 processor would prompt AMD to release an Athlon with 512KB of L2. If what some of the AMD investors say is true, and Intel will have capacity with their 130nm 300mm wafer manufacturing that outweighs demand, then they ought to put 1MB of L2 cache on their processors, and see if AMD follows suit with that. wanna_bmw

Elmer, Are you saying that you think Intel is going to the larger L2 to force AMD to follow suit and thus further restrict AMD's fab capacity? It would make sense to me. All AMD really has is one fab, and uncertain plans for the upgrade of the other. Let's say 6 months to 1 year from now, it will be impossible to sell a processor from Austin Fab, and AMD will be back to a single fab vs. vast surplus capacity of Intel. If Intel forces AMD to go with larger L2 caches, AMD will again end up with capacity limited to 5 - 7 million processors, and Intel will have no need to wage price wars. It will be more or less like 2000, when AMD had "issues" that put a cap on the # the chips that AMD could sell, and Intel just filled the remaining 83% of demand at good prices. Joe
