NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Telecommunications stocks slid in Tuesday action, as a decline in a key consumer confidence poll caused concern among investors hoping for news of stabilization in the economy.

In recent trading, the American Stock
Exchange's Networking Index, which
represents large manufacturers, fell 2.1
percent

The Nasdaq Telecommunications Index,
which tracks younger equipment
manufacturers and phone carriers,
slipped 1.7 percent.

And big phone stocks, as measured by
Standard & Poor's Communications
Services Index, gave up 1.1 percent.

Almost all large equipment makers
declined, with Alcatel, Cisco Systems
(CSCO: news, chart, profile) and Nortel
Networks (NT: news, chart, profile)
leading the retreat. Lucent Technologies
(LU: news, chart, profile), up 2.3 percent
to $7.50, was the lone gainer. It's the
eighth gain in the last nine trading
sessions.
