For those who have not already done so, year end selling for tax purposes is a certain reality. Losses must be crystallized against realized profits in order to minimize capital gains taxes. In addition to structural reasons for a year end sell off, there is the emotional factor and herd mentality. There will be an October sell off. What is debatable is how big a sell off will occur. IMO, the markets have not yet seen a bottom due to false hope of a recovery in share prices, especially in the "new economy" sector. Although share prices have dropped dramatically, share prices in many sectors, based on conservative and traditional valuation methods, remain unreasonably high. Is this the year end that will put a bottom in for the market or will a bear market drag on for a few more years(death by a thousand cuts)? Remember, when the tides goes out, all the boats go down:-))

Elisabeth, what do you think of this one? [Geomaque, not my gut] ... are their creditors motivated to shut them down between here and the point in which they turn cash flow positive? ... bit of an assumption there in the last phrase, eh whot - what else can go wrong that hasn't already?
