my impression of teachers, and i've known a few, is that they're just folks,
Agree. Problem I find, as with so many 'professions' is that the bad ones are protected by the group to the public's detriment through some misplace loyalty. My 8 year old is in French Immersion public school. From kindergarten through grade three she's had 2 credible teachers, one absolutely marvelous teacher and one totally hopeless. So the experience has been positive overall, but could have been superlative by exchanging Ms. Hopeless for a credible replacement. I wonder a the experience of those children with disinterested parents.

As far as 'homeschooling', that's not a panacea either. Teaching well is no piece of cake. It is certainly to the behoof of every parent to extend their child's education beyond the classroom. If they don't they are doing their children, themselves and society a great disservice.
