Many more people and families are impacted by those diseases than by AIDS.

There are any number of criteria for choosing. Numbers of afflicted, as you argue, is one. Jorg raised the question of the proper role of government, under which framework contagious diseases would have a higher priority. There has also been some argument about which sufferers are more deserving. If AIDS is self inflicted, so is much of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

I don't presume to know the best way to choose. They are all reasonable arguments. Perhaps that's why we spread the money around as blow the political winds.

It goes back to the communicability. And maybe you aren't in a situation where you are going to be exposed in a meaningful way to the virus, but there are a bunch of healthcare workers out there who are, as well as law enforcement and other emergency workers (fire fighters, EMTs). I bet that the healthcare workers don't worry too much about a needle stick if asthma is all the person has...or even cancer.

And maybe you are at more of a risk than you think...

Might I suggest that you don't have the mushroom soup
(watch the movie "Fight Club" to understand the meaning there).
