SAN JOSE -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) said it plans to launch an aggressive marketing campaign in the fourth quarter to highlight its Athlon chip's superior performance over Intel Corp.'s (INTC) Pentium 4 chip.

[this isn't really news. rather it's one of the few times AMD is sticking to it's plan.]

The chip maker will expand and add to its existing programs with a worldwide campaign. AMD said it is looking to distance itself from market leader Intel, whose chips boast higher speed but not always better performance.

["not always" better performance? AMD's marketing department hard at work. <g> ]

"Megahertz used to be a good indicator of performance," said Aaron Feen, a marketing manager at AMD. "That's not true anymore."

Ted, threaders, CNBC just had a little blurb about AMD planning to come out with an ad campaign in the fourth quarter saying Megahertz isn't everything; their processors do some things faster regardless, etc.

Tony, yeah, CNBC called it a marketing war as an adjunct to the pricing war.

It would appear that a marketing campaign based on the issue that megahertz isn't the important factor but rather how a chip/pc handles various applications is not going to be an easy sell no matter how true. But it would be foolish for AMD not to try.
