I've got 2 kids in the early stages of the public system, also here in Canada, and I've found the best solution is to get involved. Our school got 2 afternoons a week from me last year, and I plan on continuing in some fashion this year. I agonized over my preferences for teachers for my kids for some weeks this spring for the classes that start next week. Fortunately, both of my kids are doing extremely well. The one going into grade 2 is reading the Narnia books right now, and the one going into grade 1 is also reading, he's also my math & puter whiz. I ended up going with a split teacher situation for my gr. 2 child: 2 teachers both teach part time, alternating days and they split the curriculum. I think this will keep her from getting bored. The gr.1 child will be going into a 1/2 split class, so that if he completes his seatwork, there will be some challenging work to listen in on. Reading is encouraged in our house.

All the best,
Margie
