Here's that AMD ad article:

By Molly Williams Of THE THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

SAN JOSE (Dow Jones)Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) said it plans to launch an aggressive marketing campaign in the fourth quarter to highlight its Athlon chip's superior performance over Intel Corp.'s (INTC) Pentium 4 chip.

The chip maker will expand and add to its existing programs with a worldwide campaign. AMD said it is looking to distance itself from market leader Intel, whose chips boast higher speed but not always better performance.

"Megahertz used to be a good indicator of performance," said Aaron Feen, a marketing manager at AMD. "That's not true anymore."

(This story and related background will be available on the Journal's Web site, WSJ.com.)

The new campaign, which will be targeted at stores and other places where users buy personal computers, will draw attention to the fact that the Athlon processor, in some benchmark tests, runs applications faster and completes tasks more quickly than comparable Intel products.

AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., didn't say how much it would spend on the campaign.

Intel on Monday introduced a new 2gigahertz Pentium 4 processor. AMD's fastest Athlon runs at 1.4 gigahertz.

Elmer,

re: John, remember when the so called experts were telling us what a bad design P4 was and how stupid Intel was? Some of us knew what was inside but had to keep our mouths closed. Who looks stupid now?

Scumbria.

I remember well how most said the P4 wouldn't scale in MHz. At the time, the FUD sounded very logical. I had an exchange with Scumbria, trying to figure what was going on at Intel, that they must have had good reasons for their design decisions. It's funny to follow the posts for a few notes, to see how wrong the thinking was. And it was very wrong.

Hi Elmer

So, to complete the circle for those of us outside the industry, the P4 chip is larger than anyone predicted because it has space devoted to JT, and it currently has lower IPC than might be possible because the cache size was reduced to accommodate the JT circuits? Even though this larger die size hurts current margins, it was cheaper to do it this way than to have to design and implement two different devices. Right? Have I learned anything by reading this thread for the last few years?

PS Naturally, the stock price went down today!!
