RE:"That doesn't answer my question. I asked why Jim thinks that McKinley won't outperform Intel's IA-32 line, not whether or not it will launch before Northwood."

It appears that a current 2.0 Ghz P4 gets better Spec scores than a Itanium. At least according to Elmo and Cirruslvr. McKinley we don't know yet but imagine a 3 Ghz P4 with a 512, 1 meg or two of cache...

Intel is supposed to be gravitating the market to IA 64...how's that going to happen if the Willy @ 2.0...now available, out SPECs it? Where's all the installed base of Itanium going to come from to even support the McKinley?

Jim

Ok, but until McKinley ships, Intel has to contend with the P4 getting higher Spec scores than Itanium. By the time that McKinley ships, Intel should have Northwood in the range of 3GHz, and Xeon will have Jackson technology. So McKinley will have to have 3, maybe 4 times the performance of Merced to have an edge, however small, over their IA-32 line. That isn't going to be easy.
