Jim, I'm 100% sure the marketing folks have been wanting to do this for years now. The decision NOT to advertise comes from people above Marketing Directors. Jerry The Dictator.

An effective campaign from scratch will be 1) difficult since it will look like they're squirming - and 2) more expensive to create any kind reach and frequency. But it is their only chance.

<edit> and remember - to this point, their creative has been awful.

Dave

Jim,

Re: <<Wow, I'm impressed...after getting b*tch slapped by the low IPC, High Mhz P4, AMD has finally woken up to the fact that MHz sells...but only after Intel takes a 600 Mhz lead.
Where were these Geniuses 12 months ago?>>

Uh, flipping Whoppers at Burger King? Seems the most likely suspect as to where AMD recruits most of its marketing 'geniuses'. ;-) How else to explain that they're finally going to launch such a campaign exactly at the moment when the highest MHZ Athlon no longer compares favorably to the highest MHZ PIV. Go figure. Actually, I agree with 5Dave22's comment: This seems a move bourne of desperation, rather than marketing smarts. When you're down to your last arrow, you have to shoot it - no matter how poorly crafted it may be.
