back to my original argument, I am *against* government funding toward AIDS research, as well as cancer, heart disease, asthma etc....I can't give a strong justification for government spending on AIDS based on this. But I my argument for cancer or heart disease is even weaker. But this doesn't mean that I am against private funding of medical research.

Based on the self-infliction criteria, perhaps a good parallel is smoking/lung disease. Here in California, you can see billboards and commercials that are an anti-smoking and tobacco industry campaign that is being sponsored with tax payer money. I would be far more interested in getting rid of the federal government subsidies of the tobacco industry than I am in the government leading an ad campaign. Further, just because I don't like smoking, doesn't mean that I don't like smokers and that I think that they should all die agonizing deaths from lung cancer. I think that medical research into curing lung diseases is a good thing...I just don't believe in the government funding it.
