docpaul--Very interesting comments on the patent. Companies that thrive on proprietary technology (and investors who like that type of stock) always face the risk that someone else has invented and patented a better mouse trap. The SSTI technology seems most likely applicable to the next generation of high capacity flash memory, or some related type of nonvolatile memory.

Whether a company manufactures its own products using proprietary technology or licenses the technology to others, its profit margins will generally be much higher than those for companies making commodity products. SNDK is, it appears, now mainly a commodity producer, with possibly a few patents that may improve certain characteristics of its products, but which aren't necessarily essential and therefore don't prevent another company from producing something similar without infringing the patent.
