You have the exact same problem at the software level. Multiply threaded software is a pain to debug, because the difference in the relative timing of the the two threads can dramatically increase the ways in which failures can happen.

Couldn't the same be said of using multiple compilers?

Saturn - Ah, your post brings back many memories of my beeper going off at 3 am with Schwab, Boeing, or some other 'BIG FIRM' on the line with an MVS I/O problem or dispatching problem that turns out happens only on a multi-cpu Sysplex when the moon is full and the temp is below 50 with several CP's trying to obtain a lock or update a piece of storage!!! I guess that's why my buddies at IBM still ask if I would like to come back when I talk with them. And even as solid as MVS is, as you say, I have seen bugs surface five years after a particular piece of system code has been updated/released.
