Dan,

re: Get real, the fact is (as I've posted before) that 90% of consumers can barely associate the one number with performance, much less critique the quality of that one number, and most of the rest know AMD makes the better chip.

MHz sells, to quote one of your brothers. That's what the average consumer associates with performance, period. And you are right, the average consumer can't "critique the quality of that one number", which is what AMD is asking them to do.

- Consumer buys an A1600. Tells friend, friend laughs and says "that only runs at 1400, you fell for the AMD BS".
- Consumer is looking at PC's asks clerk about A1600. Clerk says "well it only runs at 1400, but AMD says it's as good as a 1600". Consumer frowns, confused. Asks if Intel chips run at advertised speeds.
- Consumer reads AMD ad that say MHz doesn't matter. Thinks "these guys can't keep up with Intel so they are making stuff up". (consumer is right, by the way)
- OEM's advertise a A1600 AMD computer as 1400 MHz. Consumer is confused, doesn't know what he's getting, puts off the purchase or buys Intel.
- Consumer buys A1600, returns it after he finds it only runs at 1400.
- Nutty consumer sues AMD for misrepresentation. Article makes front page of USA Today.

Just a few of the scenes that could evolve from lying to the consumer.

Consumer trust is hanging by a very thin thread. You don't fool around with your reputation for honesty. If the consumer doesn't trust you, he will never buy your product.
