Stomper, When my "crash window" opens I switch gears. Of course, I am very careful about scalping long and in fact, unless it's very compelling, I don't allow myself to do it. One of the other things I do is have orders entered below the market to stop me in. One has to be careful with these as if they are to tight, you can get stopped in on weakness and then stopped out on the bounce, but a few times on really good swishes they have paid off and I hope one or more will be in place if a really ugly swoosh is triggered.
