The real problem is not with the people trying to enter Australia (or the US or Germany, or any other partial welfare state), but with the local folks who are constantly bartering with their politicians for a free lunch and responding to mindless demagoguery. Minus the attraction of a welfare state, the self-selected potential immigrants would likely be of far more economic value to the country on a one for one basis than the majority of the self-satisfied natives. It is the countries that are left behind that are the real losers as they are drained of their most determined and valuable citizens.
