Dear Kash:

Why do you think that switching EV6 for a HT link and losing the memory controllers (not for those with integrated video) in a typical northbridge would be so hard? Since at least two northbridges will be out in Q4-01 using HT links, adding a second HT should take far less time. There are at least 4 different manufacturers readying HT linked AGP chipsets. AMD could be very well building the equivalent of 761 for Hammer and be ready on Hammers release.

Remember the memory controller(s) are on the Hammer CPU die itself which makes the current northbridges into a simple HT switch between AGP and the other HT link. Others are a switch to connect a PCI 66/64 bus, a switch to connect a PCI 33/32 bus and a switch for all the other high speed pluggable busses you can think of. A HT linked southbridge completes the chip set.

Pete

"There wont be CHIPSETS."

If nForce ships by then, there will be at least one. Of course, that assumes that nVidia adheres to the spec. or that the spec. doesn't change...

"Northwood will be in VOLUME a lot EARLIER than that."

But will it? Tualatin supposedly achieved volume some months ago and they still are incognito. Will Northwood be any better?
