Maurice, What is invention? Kepler's achievement was astounding in its day, and so was the science and engineering involved in successfully launching a geostationary satellite. However, Clarke discusses many of the principles involved in the design of "extra-terrestrial relays" in his paper, complete with mathematical analysis of the major parameters such as antenna sizes, transmitter power, use of photovoltaic solar wings... Is this not invention? I strongly recommend that anyone interested in the history of telecommunications (and the rest of you) read the original article. lsi.usp.br John
