For a while 3dfx was top dog. The Voodoo2 was one of the greatest advances in PCs...they looked invincible. Kind of like Intel.
The nVidia came along with a series of faster video chipsets. The key was that they seemed to be much faster getting product to market. 3dfx lagged in performance...
Even then it looked like 3dfx was doing well, their products were all over retail store shelves....but what was going on behind the scenes was different. nVidia had locked up all the OEMs... Then seemingly out of the blue, 3dfx went under, nVidia bought up a few pieces...
nVidia is a very dangerous company that Intel has seemed to have snubbed...
I wouldn't discount the possibility of nVidia someday absorbing AMD....
