Washington, Aug. 31 (BridgeNews) - A 0.9% rise in transportation
orders helped U.S. factory orders edge up 0.1% in July, topping
economists' expectations for a 0.5% decline. However, June's factory
orders were revised to down 2.9% from down 2.4%. Excluding
transportation, factory orders were unchanged in July, while factory
inventories fell 0.6%.

July's non-durable goods shipments, a proxy for non-durable goods
orders, were up 1.1% after a revised 3.4% decline the month before, the
Commerce Department said.

July's orders for durable goods were revised to down 0.7%, from down
0.6% as reported in the Aug. 24 preliminary report on durable goods
