One of the difficult things about this market is that traditional benchmarks such as PE have been rendered less useful by accounting mirages. Not necessarily dishonesty, but just noise.....like charges for acquisition writedowns, inventory stuff, layoffs.....you can't even tell what the E was or is, so what the P should be is also mysterious. I would be interested to know how many stocks in the S&P 500 have not taken any special charges of substance in the past three years, and how they have fared in this market.
