I'll bet you don't have a problem when the cops use force or threat of force to rescue someone from being raped.

Just as I would not have a problem if you came to the rescue of someone being raped, but I would have a problem if you extorted money from me. I don't have a problem with force per say.

At the enforcement end, the use of force is not related to whether or not it's a wise law.

Wise law? Maybe not but force in the furtherance of an unjust law is itself an injustice.

Actually in this case I'm not complaining directly about the specific application of force, if it is the law its going to be backed by force at some point or it will be ignored, as with the fact that it is the law. My point about force was merely that it wouldn't be an injustice if force or threat was not involved. It would not be extortion. If it was done by tricking someone then it would be fraud, and if it was done by stealth it would be theft or burglary.

We get input on to the desireability of a law (or a tax rate) but the fact that we get input isn't enough by itself to make something unjust. Taxation without representation is worse but taxation with representation can still be bad. I "society" was you, Neo, and me, and the two of you voted to take all my stuff it would still be unjust even if I also get a vote.

A side note - I am thinking about changing my id on SI. I got in a small bit of trouble about something I said that was traced back to me. It seems it will only be a very small bit but still it is unnerving.

Tim

If the law is legit,

Karen, the question is, what do you mean by "legit"?

Were the slavery laws legitimate?
