So much for Europe's "pro-Arab" bias....

Battle for racism talks compromise

September 5, 2001 Posted: 5:31 PM EDT (2131 GMT)

DURBAN, South Africa
-- Delegates to a U.N. conference were continuing to battle to meet a deadline to resolve a row over the Middle East that could trigger an EU walk-out.

Belgium, which has the European Union presidency, denied at the conference that the deadline set by the EU was an ultimatum.

But a French government official warned in Paris on Wednesday that the 15 states could pull out within hours if wording branding Israel as a racist state were not removed from draft documents.

The EU had given hosts South Africa until Wednesday night to broker a deal with Arab states demanding Israel be condemned for its treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories -- the issue that has already prompted a pull-out by the United States and Israel.

BTW, isn't it ironic that the UN Conference's tortuous end-game casts lily-white Europe, segregationist Brazil, and behind-the-scenes Jews as the only legitimate authorities entitled to draft the proper description of racism? Africans, Arabs, Indians, together with oppressed minorities the world over have just to sit and watch... till Western know-it-alls come up with the final draft.

Tell you what, I think the next UN Conference on Racism should be held in Davos, Switzerland, and convene only the upper crust of society like the Bilderbergers. Of course, such a distinguished party could also be set up under the auspices of a G8 Summit... Jewish organizations and lobbies would be allowed in, naturally enough, whereas Swiss riot police should take care of swarthy troublemakers --mass media branding them as "anarchists" would do the trick. What do you think?

Gus.

I strongly condemn any national movement based on ethnicity and religion.

I don't necessarily condemn anyone for nationalism and racism. These are ideas that have been around for many millennia, so I wouldn't blame any particular group for continuing the cycle. Zionists are not the first to practice this, nor will they be the last.

However, when a group decides to declare war on nationalism and racism out of one side of its mouth, and yet preaches these very concepts out of the other side of its mouth, the hypocrisy is too much to take. Jews constantly preach that greatest evil of Nazism was its anti-Semitism, not its racism towards other ethnic groups, and not its totalitarianism and destruction of personal freedom. In my opinion, Israel is carrying the torch for the racist element of Nazism.

That’s fair, I respect that. That would explain your opposition to Zionism. There are not many people who believe as you do, but there are some. I don’t want to speak for Gus, but I think his convictions are similar. At one time so were mine. When I was a kid growing up in Russia, we talked about a world without boundaries, where everyone will be treated with dignity, where everyone will contribute to the world what he can, and everyone will receive from the world what he needs. We studied Esperanto, and dreamt of beautiful future. And then we learned of the real world, world where an individual counts for nothing, where the strong preys on the weak, where defenseless can appeal for justice, for honor, for mercy – all for naught. The US is the greatest country in the world. We come here from all over, people of different races, different nationalities, different religions, and we try to get along. Not always successfully, but we try. Unfortunately, the US can’t accommodate everyone, and there are so few places like the US elsewhere. The Jews, the Kurds, the Tutsis of the world, those who have often been the target of abuse or worse, they all have learned bitter lessons what it means to be defenseless. And the only way to defend oneself is to have one’s own country and army. Since Jews were minority everywhere, they had to congregate together in one place, and Israel is the only place to which Jews are historically connected. I know you find the effects unpalatable and you disagree with the entire concept, but I hope you can understand. The goal was not to subjugate the Palestinians, but to affirm our right to live like all other nations. It was a matter of our survival. If you don’t mind, what country are you from? Do you know what happened to Jewish community there? Remember that historically Jews were a significant minority in every Middle Eastern country.
