Vodafone says 3G speeds may fall short of plan
Thursday September 6, 3:13 PM EDT

LONDON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Vodafone Group Plc (VOD) said on Thursday its next-generation mobile phone networks
might work at only a sixth of the speed that had been widely expected.

The world's biggest mobile phone firm said it could only guarantee to transmit data over its third-generation (3G) wireless
Internet networks at 64 kilobytes per second (kb/s).

Analysts had been expecting data rates of 144 to 384 kb/s.

"Sixty-four (kb/s) will be an absolute minimum," Vodafone spokesman Jon Earl said. "Most coverage areas will be capable
of up to 384 kb/s." A speed of 64 kb/s effectively rules out many advanced multi-media services expected of the new
networks.
