You want Bush to lead you where you want to go. No, just some effective leadership to get out us out of this mess. Conditions have changed dramatically since his budget plan was announced but he still clings to his budget even though his spending plans will dip into the social security surplus. Since he is the one who promised a lockbox, he should level with the public and tell them the funds are not there.

Bush (actually his economic advisers) was absolutely convinced that the $600 tax cut per family would prime the economic pump. Hasn't happened. Doubt if it will. So now what? Where do we go from here? Thousands of people being laid off their jobs every day. Hundreds of publicly traded companies still trying to maintain the profit margins they enjoyed four years ago.

Bottom line: This administration wasn't prepared for an extended economic decline. Perhaps the Democrats in Congress will provide the necessary leadership.

Stay tuned.
