Re: "... poor corporate earnings." I agree. Obscene corporate greed ... boosting the bottom line at any cost ... is coming back to bite a lot of these companies in the butt. At some point the smoke blows away. Do not overlook the presidential confidence factor. Wall Street and the American investor were very comfortable with Clinton in the White House. A lot of people who voted for Bush last November because of the immorality factor are going to rethink how bad it was to have a Democrat in the White House when their 401(k) plans are sucking pondwater.
