David, Religions have been forced to be acciountable as the excesses and scandals were exposed. The separation of church/state has helped this a lot. Countries that are religious states still have many of the excesses.

Waay back the RC chruch was totally corrupt.opse with harems etc. Gradually the people have forced them into a smaller and smaller power base...that is on it's way to being extinguished, day by day.
True many chirches do good works and take care of people, only because we watch them.
Look at the RC church and the way they abused their trust all over the world when they systematically established religious schools and sent their pedophiles to them to run them.
Now their defence was that a few pedos in power started to stream others pedos to the schools and soon they were ful of pedos, run by pedos and the boys had no ear to listen to them. In the past 10 years the discovery of these evils has made all the established churches in Canada technically bankrupt since the sale of all their property will not cover what they owe and there are more and more cases being lost every month.
The only thing that hsa saved some congregations is the separate ownership of their property by the local elders and that local groupd had no pedos in it.
Right now the Anglican and cathlic chuches name is mud in almost every province in Canada, even though many local congregations are OK and not affected.

The local power was forced by the government years ago to prevent huge land banks being amassed by churches by death bed bequests. The RC priests were bad with this, a numner were found to have faked wills etc to get the land. Now the RC church as well as other churches have limits on foreign ownership of the land by Rome.

I do not know the details of this, but it all went down last century and in the 1800s.

After this the churches went into a steep decline.
