Thank you. I realize what you said is true, but I am afraid.

Tom,

You are right that we have lost our security, as well as a large part of our day to day freedom for awhile.

But most telling is the reaction you report from Muslims elsewhere that you have spoken with. I think it likely that many, perhaps most, will share our outrage. The religious tenets of Islam (as distinguished from the political elements that get the attention) do not encompass this sort of widespread disrespect for human life. I am not an expert on that, but I have spoken to Muslims, seen talks given on the religion, and it does not encourage acts such as this.

Our response must be focused, and I have confidence that it will be. But I do believe that a policy, shared by many countries, that does not tolerate any support for terrorism, even to the point of declaring war on countries that support it, even to the point of invading those countries and ejecting those governments, could result. A mobilization of the reserves could be days away, as a first step.

You are going to see a number on the screen, perhaps tonite, perhaps tomorrow. Each day it will grow. 25,000, 35,000, 40,000? Who knows? But that number will be there, staring at us, daring us to not respond. Will the response be an overreaction? Reactions often are overreactions. But which side of the reaction spectrum ought we to err on?
