FWIW, I'm normally a dove, but I'm thinking some very hawkish thoughts today.

I have no sympathy for those who revel in the death of our citizens, no matter how badly they've been treated by others.

I respectfully disagree. The continued forceful retaliation (to show them that we are tough) will perpetrate the cycle of violence

Responding to an act of war by attacking the perpetrators is not continuing a cycle of violence, we have not been part of a cycle, we were the victims of a "bolt out of the blue" attack. The attack was done from hatred but also from an attempt to scare the US. If we do what the attackers would want us to do we only encourage them and others like them. Osama would not give up his war against the US if there was a settlement in Israel. He would probably not accept the settlement or might not care one way or their other. He is not a Palestinian. He does hate Israel but would hate the US even if we invaded Israel to install a Palestinian government. He hates the West and most specifically the US.

Also you went beyond pushing Israel for a settlement favorable to the Palestinians. You also advocated that the US should support the Serbs. This would create a new group that is against the US. We might even face Israeli terrorists who would be mad about us pushing them to an unfavorable agreement with the Palestinians and who think that our response shows that attacking the US will cause it to cave in and support your (the attackers not you George) agenda.

And those who might have supported us in a fight with terrorism will see us as week and unreliable. We would alienate our allies, encourage our enemies and make new enemies.

Tim
