>>>I am in the minority I am sure in saying I believe there should be no reprisals as violence can never be justified.<<<

Perhaps not...a violent reprisal would be a continuation of the violence.

But some suppositions will have to be rethought. For fifty years we have given Israel unlimited financial and military aid while ignoring the poverty and destitution of the surrounding Arab countries.

This is contrary to how we treated the Japanese and the Germans following the Second World War. We rebuilt those countries and their economies and the surrounding geographies. We rebuilt Israel and ignored the neighborhood.

As I see it both Israel and the Palestinians have to prosper in order that they both survive. If we buy armaments for Israel we have to provide employment and dignity for the whole area.

If just part of the American money spent on Israel and armaments were diverted to economic development of that area today might not have happened.

Mine might be a minority view, but revenge and retribution are not the solution....

Regards, Jerome

Brian - The problem is that not everyone is rational and good. Inevitably some people will be underprivledged and inevitably some will want to blame someone and seek 'vengeance'. Only a credible and swift punishment is likely to disuade them or stop them. I wish it were otherwise. But of course the stick without the carrot is a very bad plan as well.

As Lincoln did and as Churchill said: "In war: resolution. In defeat: defiance. In victory: magnanimity. In peace: goodwill."
