Zeev:
NBC NYC affiliate reported this evening that over 200 firemen and 78 policemen are reported missing after going into towers to evacuate the Towers before they collapsed. There is no firefighting or rescue going on right now because the tight streets of lower Manhattan are just piled too high with debris to do anything practical. I been in the WTC complex many times and we are talking about buildings less than 100 ft apart laterally but hundreds of feet high. I fear that it will fires will spread overnight to all of the major financial instutitions not already collapsed. There is many open gas mains and no water pressure to fight fires.

The WTC and surrounding buildings took almost 10 years to build, a few hours to bring down and many months to clean up.
I don't expect NYSE to reopen from Wall Street. It is 2 blocks from ground zero unless it moves to another location.

john

PS MSDW reports on the home page of their web site that 3500 employees were located in WTC offices. I can't beleive the possible tremendous loss of life that may have been reeked upon just this one firm.

PPS good luck with grub 30K. I will not be able to give an grub assist tonight.

Zeev - I have been waiting for you to weigh in all day.
Wondering where you have been.
Glad to see you.
If you posted this AM I missed it or was so FN shocked I do not remember it.

All day at work I got nothing done. This is a disaster.

What about a system that would NOT EVER let a plane fly into certain targets not even on manual. Could that help?

Or how about this....
If a plane was off course on a signal from tower, manual override turned off an autopilot turned on. Hijakers could do nothing. Plane would land at designated spot.

Zeev:

Interesting that the attack occurred on September 11. 9/11. 911, the national emergency number.

Zeev:

Any thoughts about the market after today's events? My take is that it probably means a lengthy bottoming process rather than the strong rally off the lows many are expecting.

""a huge "Christian/Muslim" conflict"" - they better eliminate words ANGER!!!

This is one scary position, these radical Muslims have nothing to lose, many live in third world surroundings. Allah is all that matters to them, fear is not a word they know, death is a fight for the cause.

No doubt this is the next thing the world must face. The problem is that damn oil the west so badly needs - if we did not need it I say leave them to rot in their own backwaters.

The whole situation in Israel is a powderkeg and due to election of Sharon is what is sparking this.

The hatred of the Muslim world will only gain power from todays events, many more martyrs will step forward. We have only seen round one in a coming scary situation.

I live very near a nuclear power plant, this is nothing compared to what these freaks can do to us.

Blow up the Hoover Dam and the west will be brought to its knees. Blowing up a building is big but the tip of the iceburg if our government handles this wrong - it could ignite a war never seen in our lifetimes.

The next 2 weeks and how we handle this is so important. With our open society - it will be so easy to penetrate, they took these planes with basic knives my god.

All the best

West

I fear we may get what Nosterdamus was predicting for the early part of this millennium, a huge "Christian/Muslim" conflict.

You believe in the predictions of Nosterdamus? It is hard to have respect for someone that believes future events can be predicted. Let me guess about this Nosterdamus prediction please. "The hairy monkey grabs his package, and the hairless monkey kicks him there" I can see how the interpretation is so close to reality.

Zeev, I read this post on the Turnips thread.

Message 16333655

Isn't WTC likely to cause consumers to pull back somewhat, resulting in a decent recession. The economy is already on shaky ground. At the very least, this should mitigate the turnips' upside target for next March/April.

Colin Powell's comments on the US response are far more measured and reasonable, thank God, than a lot of posters on SI who then go and criticize others for being reasonable.
