Regarding counter-terrorist war:

Despite the current psychology, having seen buildings collapse and even part of the Pentagon in ruins, the public will view an extended war, with casualties but no ground occupied, no great cities liberated, and no possibility of victory, as nothing more than supplementing the civilian losses already incurred. The two end-results are giving up such a war after a few years, when many people have been put in harm's way and killed or wounded, or a retreat into isolationism, with resources diverted to every type of defense from NMD to airports that take a half-day to get into, along with vastly reduced flights. The latter result is an economic disaster, while the former is a moral disaster. And in both cases, yesterday's terrorists win-because we lose.

This is not a plea to anyone for anything. I don't even care if this is read by anyone. It is reality-and that is sorely lacking today...

Counter-terrorist war, final:

After a few months or a year of such a disastrous war, factions in the public will turn against a government that pursues it. The American left has not abandoned their own war against our society, and they will quickly adjust to the concept of "Mr. Bush's unwinnable war" to introduce the next Clinton or Gore, who will lie and promise a solution.

Bush and his team, of course, understand this. The question is, will they be perceptive enough to avoid it?

I have been fascinated that this event has clearly shown (at least here on this thread) who will fight for their ideals, but is first an American. Most of us. We have taken off the gloves for a time in the less important arena of political ideology and rhetoric. (We will certainly slip them back on over time. ;)

But there are those on each side of the argument who not only can't let go of their bigoted hatred for those who do not think like them but amazingly seem to become even more grotesque in the light of these events.

Hopefuly some of them will see this terrible mistake and turn around.
