Win, What if machines get smarter and smarter and are granted sentient status, they have right etc, so they would want to get paid and would be free to self determine their lives.
Well one day AI may get there. In the slave era a slave was more or less an expensive piece of property that did various tasks. It was not until that concept in mens minds was changed that slaves became people in their own right.
Remember the Roman empire had a history of slaves, esp from Russia(Slavs) and other northern climes. In those days the slaves were blond/red haired whites and the italians were the darker skinned ones. Even Greeks had slaves and became splaves in their turn.

It was not until all people gained the right of self determination that slavery ended. The South did not want to get rid of all their expensive slave/machinery as they would then have to work for a living or hire workers.

So a few enlightened people like Washington came to this conclusion well before others and freed their slaves. In time the ROW did this, although there are some holdouts in Africa..
Most of the founders were capitalists of their day and new how to manage the means of production(slaves) but some did not agree and in time this grew. England pretty much led the world ig getting rid of slavery, the USA came along later, Africa still has slavery in pockets here and there.
