I like your ideas, too.

I think both together would work exceptionally
well.

That said, I don't see any way to preclude
someone determined on destroying an aircraft
from doing so. The loss of any life is a
tragedy, but given a choice, I'd rather lose
200 than 20,000.

and also give the cockpit the ability to inject a submissive "gas" instantly into the passenger area. Discussion ensued whereby it was noted that innocents would be subjected to the danger of "going under" along with the perpetrators but it was viewed as preferable to an all encompassing catastrophic end to the incident.

1 - Any gas that can rapidly and reliably take people down also runs the risks of killing people.

2 - If the hijackers can get weapons on board they might be able to get gas masks as well.
