Jerome and others-- We are often writing as if there were a single spokesperson for the Arab position. In fact, there are many. Many Arabs in E. Jerusalem don't want Israel to leave; they are afraid of the corruption and lack of civil liberties that a Palestinian government might present--according to the NY Times of abt a yr ago. There are many Arabs who are appalled by terrorism. And there are those who promote violence as an instrument of advancing their cause. In Western countries law prevails. Law requires committment to principles and perhaps the Arab countries, with little democratic tradition, and with few enforcement resources, do not have the strength to use law. I have doubts about lack of enforcement because some of the Arab regimes seem strong when dealing with internal opposition.

Brian, I hope both the military and the prison systems become anachronistic. I am convinced that they are currently necessary.

Jerome, I just got a phone call from a relative in Germany that made my day. The young lady said tomorrow there will be 10 minutes of silence in German firms and government offices and another, similar, 3 minutes on Friday to honor the victims in the U.S. and show solidarity. She mentioned there is talk of the gratitude Germans feel about American help in the post-WW2 era. Most regular German TV programming has been pre-empted and yesterday many stayed home to watch in horror.

Jerome, I HAVE been to BOTH Israel AND the West Bank, in fact, just recently in June. I even took a trip in a bullet proof bus through a "hot" zone near Jerusalem.

I can tell you that dropping support for Israel, which is what you are really saying, will mean the end of Israel yet without any benefit to the USA. It would NOT mean the end of our problems with the Arab world, as I specifically demonstrate by reminding you about the Iran-US Embassy siege, the Iran-Iraq War and the Iraq-Kuwait invasion.

So, while I respect your posts here and your opinions, your "I don't know what to do but we should mind our own business" post is naive. As distasteful as supporting Israel may be for some Americans, it's the least nasty alternative.
